Paper Coffee Cups Are Not Actually Recyclable in Most Places
Pretty much everyone has tossed a paper coffee cup into a recycling bin at some point in time with the intention of creating a future for that cup as a post-consumer-waste based product. The sad truth is that many types of paper cups aren't actually recyclable.
The majority of paper coffee cups have a thin layer of wax or plastic that helps prevent them from getting soggy and leaky. This layer, although helpful during the drinking experience, makes the cups extremely hard to recycle. The majority of communities in the United States aren't equipped with recycling technology capable of dealing with these types of cups. Cups that get ‘recycled’ in communities lacking the proper recycling technology instead end up in a landfill. Fortunately, there is a solution!
