UK Making Moves to Tax Disposable Coffee Cups

The United Kingdom is seeing some serious success in the reduction of single-use plastic bags thanks to a recently imposed tax. According to a study by Cardiff University:

More than nine in 10 people now often or always carry their own bags, up from seven in 10 before the 5 pence charge came into effect, and the public became much more supportive after it started. The number of plastic bags taken from supermarkets and big retailers in England has fallen by 85%.”

What’s even more promising is the study suggests a similar tax on disposable coffee cups could have similar effects in an age when only 1 in 400 coffee cups in the UK gets recycled.
